Such a good idea. I’m so pleased to see the crowds when I venture out for an evening art fix. Some places appear to be so delighted with the results that they’re putting on Drink and Draw evenings and even later nights with spooky events for Halloween. What’s next? White Nights on the summer solstice? Easter Bunny watch? The profit on cocktails and evening snacking must be an exciting new income stream for financially stretched art institutions. Can it go too far? Should curmudgeons get curmudgeonly about the dino-disco that takes over the Natural History Museum or cheer that they can update ancient glass cases without begging for lottery cash or putting up charges. Or will they do all of those? The entrepreneurial spirit in the art world has to be applauded. There’s so much expensive updating to be done in museums, not to mention wonderful things for them to acquire. If they can do all that with a slice of cake, a T-shirt, a cocktail and keep open the hours that are convenient for us, we should not just applaud but cheer.
