  • “When I sit down to make a sketch from nature, the first thing I try to do is to forget that I have ever seen a picture.” So said John Constable RA, arguably the most influential British landscape artist of the nineteenth century. His large-scale oil sketch for ‘Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows’ comes back on display for the New Year, along with works by other significant Victorian painters who captured the world around them in innovative ways, and developed a rich heritage of British landscape art that still thrives today.
