The first room is about the horrors or Paris 1870-1, with powerful illustrations by various artists Including Corot, Manet and Dore. Later there are paintings by actual Impressionists who came to England to escape Paris. The Monets are tremendous – the one in the picture above a particular favourite (his views of the Thames are scattered around the world in museums); and there are pictures of England looking very English by Pissarro . In between, there are too many Tissots for me, and some forgettable other works, though these rooms are interesting in reflecting current English taste. I enjoyed the exhibition but it seemed a bit unfocussed.
